Anduril is an autonomous defense systems company that develops and sells AI-powered systems. Providing valuable data, software, and hardware systems, Anduril’s products are engineered to allow its customers to defend themselves from aerial, land-based, and maritime threats. Learn more about Anduril’s history and milestones in today’s blog.
Anduril’s History & Milestones
Anduril’s existence can be largely attributed to Trae Stephens, its current chairman. In 2014, Stephens joined the Founders Fund, and while at the firm, he developed a thesis on the broken state of the government’s approach to defense contracting. He then wanted to make it his mission to back the next defense tech startup. Stephens met Palmer Luckey shortly after Luckey sold Oculus VR to Meta in 2014, bonding over their shared interests in national security. After Luckey left Facebook, Stephens pitched him an idea for a modern defense contractor and Luckey was immediately interested. In 2017, the two co-founded Anduril Industries. [1]
Why?
Luckey and Stephens realized that the once feared capabilities of the U.S. armed forces, which had previously inspired science fiction, had been surpassed by innovations in commercial technology.[2] Anduril was founded to not only become the next major defense prime, but one that operates on the principles of speed, innovation, and disruption of the status quo.
Anduril’s Products
Anduril’s product offerings are comprised of defense capabilities that leverage both advanced software and hardware. Its family of autonomous systems, powered by Lattice-OS, is built to provide situational awareness and security across land, sea, and air.[3]
Lattice OS
Lattice OS is an AI-powered software system engineered to act as a general command hub and is at the center of Anduril’s capabilities. This system is designed to enable users to make more critical decisions on the battlefield and act with confidence to close complex kill chains. Lattice OS uses sensor fusion, computer vision, edge computing, machine learning, and AI to detect, track, and classify every object of interest in an operator’s vicinity.
Menace-I and Menace-X
Menace-I is an integrated command, control, communications, and computing (C4) structure designed to support operations in austere environments. Menace is engineered to be a mobile command center that supports classified mission planning with fewer transportation and logistical requirements. Depending on the mission type, multiple Menace structures can be paired together to help more sustained tactical operations or short-term operations.
Menace-X
In April 2024, Anduril released Menace-X an additional vehicle-based system that aims to extend operational and strategic-level capabilities. The system provides situational awareness by bringing national, strategic, and local sensor data, allowing for real-time tasking of assets and prosecution of targets.

Force Protection
Anduril has developed advanced surveillance, classification, tracking, and threat identification systems capable of serving defense needs in different environments and scenarios. Anduril has three force protection defense applications: counter Unmanned Aerial Systems (UAS), counter intrusion, and maritime counter intrusion.
WISP
Anduril also provides a 360-degree imaging product called Wide-Area Infrared System for Persistent Surveillance (WISP). WISP is engineered to deliver AI-enabled, passive, full-motion, 360-degree wide-area high-quality imaging to enable persistent automated threat detection and situational awareness.
Air Systems
Anduril’s air systems consist of four primary products: Ghost, Fury ALTIUS, and Roadrunner, designed for surveillance, reconnaissance, and threat destruction.
Ghost
Anduril’s Ghost system is engineered to develop intuitive autonomy, balancing extended range, and multi-payload capacity within a small footprint. The company offers a baseline variant (Ghost) and an expanded capability variant (Ghost-X). Anduril claims that it can be assembled and readied by a single operator in less than two minutes without tools.[4]

Fury
Its Fury system is a high-performance, multi-mission group 5 autonomous air vehicle (AAV). Fury is designed to accelerate the development, testing, and fielding of autonomous missions into operational reality for the warfighter.

ALTIUS
ALTIUS is a UAS engineered to be a versatile platform that can be launched from the ground, air, or sea to conduct multiple mission types. It aims to offer best-in-class loitering time and range, using autonomy to help execute collaborative and coordinated strikes.

Roadrunner
Roadrunner is a twin-turbojet vertical take-off and landing (VTOL) AAV designed for efficient, high-speed reconnaissance and surveillance missions. It integrates with the Lattice AI platform and is equipped with autonomous navigation and real-time data processing capabilities to enhance situational awareness. The Roadrunner is reusable, offering sustainable and cost-effective solutions for both civilian and military operations.
Roadrunner M
The Roadrunner M is an advanced version of Anduril’s Roadrunner. It shares the core functionalities of autonomous navigation and real-time data processing with the original Roadrunner. Its design focuses on increased versatility and efficiency in various operational contexts, maintaining its reusability and integration with the Lattice AI platform for advanced situational awareness.

Underwater Vehicle: Dive-LD
Dive-LD is Anduril’s autonomous underwater vehicle that is designed for deep-water inspection and reconnaissance. It has a flexible and unique architecture that is capable of rapid integration of complex payloads or multi-sensor suites. It can service a multitude of mission types such as undersea battlespace intelligence, surveillance and reconnaissance, mine counter-warfare, anti-submarine warfare, seafloor mapping, and more.

Solid Rocket Motors (SRMs)
Anduril designs and produces SRMs to power space launch systems and defenses. The company also produces ALITEC, an aluminum-lithium alloy propellent engineered to improve SRM motor performance.
Barracuda Series
Additionally, in September 2024, Anduril unveiled its Barracuda family of low-cost, easily producible cruise missiles designed for large-scale manufacturing with minimal specialized labor and tools. Its Barracuda series includes the -100, -250, and -500 variants, offering features like over 500 nautical miles of range and compatibility with multiple platforms.

Anduril Milestones
Anduril has achieved multiple milestones within the last few years. Some of its milestones are but not limited to the following:
- Doubled revenue to about $1 billion in 2024[5] with a potential for an initial public offering (IPO) “on the horizon” according to Anduril chairman Trae Stephens[6]
- Has notable partnerships with the U.S. Department of Defense, the U.S. Department of Homeland Security, the Australian Defense Force, and the U.K. Ministry of Defense
- Raised $1.5 billion of funding in August 2024, almost doubling its valuation from $6.96 billion to $14 billion[7]
- Invested $75 million in June 2024 to increase its production of solid rocket fuel and solid rocket motors (SRMs) from 600 to 6,000 per year
- Named to the Forbes AI 50 list in April 2024
Anduril Funding
Anduril has raised over $3.7 billion as of August 2024.[8] Some of Anduril’s larger investors include Lightspeed Venture Partners, Andreessen Horowitz, 137 Ventures, Liquid 2 Ventures, and Valor Equity Partners, among others.
As of February 2025, Anduril is reportedly in talks to raise a new $2.5 billion Series G round that would value the company at $28 billion. This new round could be led by Founders Fund, where Trae Stephens, Anduril’s chairman, is a partner. Founders Fund is expected to contribute $1 billion.[9]
Final Thoughts
Since its inception in 2017, Anduril has been changing the defense industry by developing and selling AI-powered autonomous defense systems. Its technology is used by various government organizations and continues to innovate with the funding it has raised. Additionally, Anduril’s chairman has reportedly announced that there could be a potential IPO on the horizon, within the next three to five years. With its continuous innovation and adaptation as global threats evolve, Anduril has put itself at the forefront of defense technology. What could be next for Anduril?
